Google Photos Storage Limit

What is the Google Photos Storage Limit?

If you are using a personal (consumer) Google account, High Quality photos and videos uploaded to Google Photos will count towards your free 15GB of Google storage. Any High Quality photos uploaded before June 1, 2021 will not be counted on your Google storage limit.

Exceptions to the Google Photos Storage Limit

The exception to the Google Photos storage limit rule are current Google Pixel phones (starting at 4, 4XL, and 4a models and beyond), which come with unlimited High Quality photo and video storage. The next Pixel phones, like all other phones, will follow the June 1 rule though.

Additional Google Photos Storage Changes

June 1, 2021 was also the start date of storage changes affecting users of Google Workspace for Business, Google Workspace for Education, and Google Workspace for Nonprofits. Storage changes for these services can be found here: Changes to Google Workspace Storage Policy Timelines.

What To Do If You Need More Storage Space

If you need more than 15GB of storage for your personal Google account, you can purchase more storage here.

For those who don’t want to purchase more storage, depending on your phone, you may be able to go into your Google Photos settings and reduce your image quality to Express, and those photos will not count towards your storage limit. However, if you do this, be aware that the photos and videos will be saved in a lower resolution (3mp for photos and 480p for videos) and may not look as clear as you want them to be. To change your photo quality settings and check if you can change the quality to Express, follow the steps here.
